Background of the Study
The retail industry has long relied on promotional strategies to drive sales and increase customer loyalty. One such strategy, bulk purchase discounts, offers customers price reductions when purchasing larger quantities of a product. This approach not only encourages higher sales volumes but also enhances customer perception of value, which can increase store loyalty (Abubakar, 2023). In Nasarawa State, department stores have increasingly employed bulk purchase discounts as part of their pricing strategy, aiming to appeal to cost-conscious consumers and incentivize bulk buying. These discounts are typically designed to benefit both the retailer and the consumer, as customers are enticed to buy more products at a reduced price, while retailers enjoy higher sales volumes and improved inventory turnover.
The effectiveness of bulk purchase discounts in influencing customer purchase volume in Nasarawa State remains under-explored. Department stores are faced with the challenge of managing inventory and ensuring that discounts lead to sustainable sales growth without compromising profitability. While bulk discounts are known to increase sales, there is limited research on how they specifically impact customer behavior in the Nasarawa context. Additionally, factors such as product category, consumer income levels, and the type of discount structure (e.g., flat discounts vs. percentage-based discounts) may play significant roles in determining the success of such strategies. This study aims to assess how bulk purchase discounts influence customer purchase volume in department stores in Nasarawa State, providing insights into how retailers can optimize their discount strategies to maximize sales.
Statement of the Problem
Despite the widespread use of bulk purchase discounts by department stores, the direct impact on customer purchase volume in Nasarawa State remains unclear. While some studies suggest that bulk discounts can increase sales, department stores may face challenges such as reduced profit margins and customer reliance on discounts, which could negatively impact long-term profitability. Additionally, there is a lack of empirical research on the specific factors that influence how customers respond to bulk discounts in the context of Nasarawa State’s retail environment. This study seeks to fill this gap by exploring how bulk purchase discounts affect customer purchase volume and identifying the conditions under which such discounts are most effective.

Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study will focus on department stores in Nasarawa State, Nigeria, and will specifically investigate the effects of bulk purchase discounts on customer purchase volume. The study will not include other retail types such as small businesses or online stores, which may experience different consumer behaviors. Limitations of the study include the reliance on self-reported data, which may lead to biases in responses, and the difficulty of measuring the precise long-term impact of bulk discounts on customer loyalty.
